With the fantastic year-round climate and excellent course conditions, the area truly is a golfer’s paradise. In 2006, only 17 U.S. courses garnered the coveted 5-star rating. Pinehurst No. 2 has achieved this distinction and is the only course in NC to be designated with the 5-star rating.
Twenty-eight of the 29 courses in the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area (97%) were rated 3 stars or greater.
If horses are your passion you have come to the perfect place. The Sandhills area offers equestrian living at its finest. At the center of the equestrian community is the Walthour-Moss Foundation providing close to 4,500 acres for horse-related activities. It is virtually unspoiled and considered a horse heaven and natural sanctuary for a variety of equine pursuits. Hoke county is home to the Carolina Horse Park which provides premier national and international equestrian events and is located 12 miles south of Southern Pines.
There are well-known, friendly rivalries between local golfers and the riders. The golfers tend to grouse that the horse people are holding the perfect land for a new golf course; the horse enthusiasts complain that the golfers are consuming a perfectly decent cross country course for a fairway.
The area has many activities available outside of the horse and golf set starting with a gorgeous tennis club. There are also excellent opportunities for canoeing, carriage rides, fishing, hiking, hunting and beautiful parks.
